Age is just a number, right? Then let’s keep it that way! Growing older can be terrifying. After becoming a young adult, aging is more problematic than it is fun. Wrinkles, grey hairs, exhaustion, etc. It can be overwhelming. But there is nothing to be afraid of. With every “imperfection” comes a way to deal with it… by embracing it with love and compassion and moisturizer. Getting older comes with more experience and time to find healthy ways to deal with changes beyond our control. If it is a natural part of life, then there is also a natural solution to the problem, whatever it may be.  If aging skin is your concern then great news, here are 8 foolproof tips for healthy skin:

1. Start Now. 

My favorite of all the tips for healthy skin is to plan ahead and love your skin now. It’s never too early or too late to establish a healthy skincare routine. The first step is to understand that healthy skin comes from inside factors and outside factors. Your skin is impacted by the food you eat, the liquids you drink (especially sugary drinks), and the stress you experience. It’s also impacted by sun and environmental factors like pollution, as well as, the types of products you use. Start thinking about creating an all-encompassing skincare routine, not just which moisturizer to buy next.

2. Skincare. 

It is a fragile, yet beautiful part of your body, and starting with your face, it will take care of you, if you take care of it. Start with a cleanser, and make sure the pH is low. Higher pH levels are much too harsh and can irritate and dry out your skin. To maintain a nice balance of your skin, using a cleanser for a short amount of time each day is highly beneficial. This will also help you avoid toners, as they are only needed after cleansers with high pH levels. Don’t overwash though. Listen to your skin. It will tell you if it feels greasy, dirty, or overly cleaned.

3. Exfoliate. 

The human skin consists of 3 layers; the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the outer layer, and this is the one that needs a lot of your attention! Every 28 days, your cells are turned over and replaced by new ones. Unfortunately, as you age, your skin delays when it comes to refreshing itself. Those dead skin cells don’t get replaced as rapidly, which means your skin will begin to look dull. Using exfoliants is key to helping these dead skin cells find their way off of your body. 

4. Moisturize. 

As you age, your skin produces a significantly lower amount of oil. With this comes less acne and breakouts, but much drier skin. Wrinkles and lines come from scarce skin hydration and lack of fat under your skin! Look for ingredients that include two things: Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin. Avoid products with Retinol (Vitamin A) as this ingredient may cause developmental and reproductive issues, and “speed the development of skin tumors and lesions on sun-exposed skin.

Photoaging is the premature aging of the skin caused by repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation, primarily from the sun. The sun is a big reason for the very visible signs of aging that you may see on your face. It is extremely important to your overall health, but also powerful and damaging to your skin if exposure is long-term. The sun breaks down collagen which leads to thinner skin and wrinkles. You may also get brown spots which are uneven-pigmented patches. Use sunscreen every single day. It is useful all the time, not just at a swimming pool. The application can lead to fading aging spots, smooth skin texture, and flatter wrinkles. A little bit goes a really long way. Be sure to use non-toxic sunscreen options.

6. Take Care Of Yourself. 

Good skincare is more than just what products go onto your skin. Smoking and drinking, although they may be something that is a part of your everyday life, or a major part of your socializing activities, are not helping you at all. One spoils your healthy skin by replacing it with wrinkles, while the other completely dehydrates you from the inside out.  

7. Drink Your Water. 

Your skin and body will glow when it is enriched with hydrating, clean water. Aim for your weight divided by two in ounces. So if you want 150lbs divide that by two, which will give you 75. Mean you want to aim for 75oz of clean water a day. By doing this you’ll also have more energy to do the things that your body is begging you for!   

8. Exercise. 

One of the best and most overlooked tips for healthy skin is exercise. Exercising is all around healthy for your body, it enhances circulation in your body and improves your immune system. Sweating is also a great way to release toxins trapped in or beneath your skin.

Aging doesn’t have to be a bad experience if you turn it into a great one. Gentle but consistent care for your body and skin will leave you happier and brighter. These are easy and beneficial lessons to learn and put to use immediately.
