How To Stay Motivated When Getting Healthy

As the new year comes and goes, so many of us set lofty goals only to watch them fade away by the first, second, or third week of the new year. I want this year to be different for all of us!

Setting a goal shouldn’t be challenging. It should be something you want to do, have an interest in doing, or have a need to accomplish. The goal itself should be challenging, but attainable. The goal should be just challenging enough to keep you interested and motivated to achieve it.

If you’ve found yourself lost in a sea of failed New Year’s goals, here are some tips to get you motivated, focused, and back on the wagon… and most importantly successful throughout the whole year!

Below are some straightforward basic tips on how to stay motivated when losing weight or for any goal really.

How To Stay Motivated

CONSIDER SETTING A SMART GOAL

  • Specific – target a specific area for improvement.
  • Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.
  • Assignable – specify who will do it.
  • Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.
  • Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

MAKE SURE THIS GOAL IS SOMETHING YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT

This means making sure it’s something you feel passionate about. That you see value in completing or meeting the set goal. If you don’t have this, consider adjusting your goal to include something that excites you. If you aren’t sure, ask yourself the “why” question. “Why do I want to achieve this goal?

A bonus tip here is to ask yourself the “why” questions 7-times until you get to the root reason.

ENVISION YOURSELF ACHIEVING THE GOAL

Daydream about what it will feel like once you’ve accomplished your goal. This will help motivate you to reach that feeling in real life. You can use this practice while you’re working on achieving your goal and may start to feel like you’re losing momentum. Remind yourself of how it will feel when you’ve accomplished the goal.

WRITE DOWN YOUR GOAL

This helps make it more official and helps you remember exactly what the goal is. This will also help clarify your goal. Feel free to write down different versions of it, and narrow it down until you get exactly what you want

TELL A FRIEND OR LOTS OF PEOPLE

This makes it even more official and holds you accountable. It’s much easier to break a goal or promise to yourself than it is to break it when made to someone else. Telling someone may also help you reach your goal faster or with more support along the way, and you’ll have someone to share the joy and excitement with, once you’ve accomplished your goal.

MAKE A PLAN

Write down the steps you need to take in order to reach your goal. Be clear and detailed here. No task is too small to write down. Include everything! Then use this as a checklist as you work towards your goal. One of my favorite things to do is cross off a task when I’ve completed it. Drawing that line through the task is so gratifying!

START!… AND STICK WITH IT UNTIL THE END!

One of my favorite quotes is from Meryl Streep, “START, by starting.” Then stick with it. Hold true to yourself, and don’t let anyone or anything keep you from reaching that goal…, especially yourself! Keep that internal negative chatter in line, show it whos boss, and make it happen!

… lastly, if you had a goal this year, and you’ve already lost the momentum, simply just dust it off and start again RIGHT NOW!

You’ve got this!
